Primary schools recognise active citizenship in Aussie students

As primary schools settle into a new year, Australian students are being recognised for their active citizenship throughout the country through Aussie of the Month.

More than 1,200 schools now participate in the program nationwide, reaching a student population of approximately 380,000.

Running from February to November each year, Aussie of the Month celebrates students who display Australian values such as respect, inclusion, mateship and fair go for all.

“Active citizenship is about getting involved in your local community and displaying values such as respect, inclusion and helping others,” says Brett White, Assistant Secretary of the Citizenship Policy Branch of the Department of Home Affairs, which supports the Aussie of the Month program. “The Department of Home Affairs is proud to encourage and recognise young Australians who exemplify these values through our sponsorship of this program.”
