What is Active Citizenship?

In its simplest form, Active Citizenship means getting involved in your community.  Looking out for and helping people or groups that need support and also conducting yourself in a way that promotes mutual respect, tolerance and social inclusion for all groups of people.

Active citizenship in schools has many forms and may include:

  • participating in a buddying-up program

  • running a clean-up campaign

  • organising a fundraiser for someone in the community who needs support

  • providing opportunities for student leaders to form a Student Council

What ever your school does to encourage active citizenship is fine, our goal for Aussie of the Month is simple. We seek to educate all young people about the importance of community participation and looking out for those who need support.
