Refugee Week is a time to honour refugees around the world. In 2024, it takes place from 16 – 22 June, with World Refugee Day on 20 June. It celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an opportunity to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognise their resilience in rebuilding their lives.
Explain to students the journey and experience of a refugee and then ask them to write a letter to a refugee child. What would they say to them? How would they speak to them?
Read stories of real-life refugees to your students. If you have a local community member who is a refugee, invite them to speak and share their story with your students. Invite students to ask questions so they gain a better understanding.
There are plenty of tools and ideas to help your students get involved in Refugee Week, including useful and engaging resources, promotional kits and lesson plan ideas. Click below to access them.
To recognise Refugee Week, you could invite a local refugee who is active in the community and can share their personal story.
